How to Stay Consistent (The Boring Answer That Works)

Why consistency beats intensity, how to size habits for your worst day, and the recovery rules that keep a streak alive through a bad week.

Almost everyone can do a hard week. Very few can do an ordinary month. Consistency is the skill that separates people who make progress from people who repeatedly restart, and it's mostly a design problem rather than a character one.

Size the habit for your worst realistic day

If your plan only works on days when you sleep eight hours and nothing goes wrong, it will run at maybe 40%. Pick the version you could complete on a bad Tuesday — twenty minutes, not ninety — and treat anything beyond that as a bonus.

Fix the time, not just the intention

A habit without a slot competes with everything else in your day and usually loses around 4pm. Anchor it to something that already happens reliably: after coffee, after the commute, immediately after you close your laptop.

Protect the streak, and forgive one miss

  • Never miss twice — the second consecutive miss is where habits die
  • Use a minimum action on impossible days so the chain stays unbroken
  • Use streak freezes for genuine emergencies rather than resetting to zero
  • Judge yourself on a monthly completion rate, not a perfect record

Expect the dip in week three

Novelty carries you through the first fortnight. Around week three it stops being interesting and results still aren't visible. This is the moment to make the habit smaller, not to add discipline — a habit you keep at half size beats one you abandon at full size.

Review weekly, adjust monthly

Fifteen minutes a week: what held, what slipped, what changes. Then leave the plan alone until the next review. Constant tinkering is its own form of avoidance.
