How to Achieve Your Goals (And Stick to Them Past February)

Turn goals into weekly actions: shorter horizons, measurable outcomes, the two or three habits that drive progress, and honest monthly reviews.

Goals don't usually fail dramatically. They fail by having no next action. Six weeks after setting one, most people can't say what the goal requires of them this Tuesday — and a goal that doesn't reach into your week isn't really a goal, it's a preference.

Shorten the horizon

Twelve weeks beats twelve months. A year is long enough that nothing feels urgent until October; a quarter forces you to decide what actually matters and creates a real deadline.

Separate the outcome from the actions

'Lose 8kg' is an outcome you don't directly control. 'Four training sessions and cooking five dinners a week' are actions you do control. Set the outcome, then track the actions — the actions are where accountability belongs.

Pick two or three driving habits

  • Choose the smallest set of repeating actions that produce the outcome
  • Schedule them into specific slots in your week
  • Track completion rate, not effort
  • Review the link monthly: are these actions actually moving the number?

Build in milestones

A twelve-week goal with no intermediate markers gives you nothing to hit for eleven weeks. Set checkpoints at weeks four and eight so there's something to aim at while the finish line is still abstract.

Be willing to kill a goal

Carrying five stalled goals is worse than carrying one live one. If a goal has produced no completed actions in a fortnight, either shrink it, reschedule it, or archive it honestly. Deliberate abandonment is a decision; drift is just noise.
